Ear trainer

A free ear trainer on tools.aden.space/ear in three skills. Notes are named on a one-octave piano, from middle C to all twelve in any octave on any sound; intervals and chords are named on keys in the piano's place, from the fifth to every interval and from major and minor to every seventh chord. Levels with checkpoints, a daily goal and each answer's month of stats, kept in the browser.

What it is

An ear trainer in your browser, at tools.aden.space/ear. Something plays, you name it. No account. Three skills, picked above the trainer:

  • Notes. A note plays, you name it on the piano. Start with middle C, then add G, E, D and A, F and B: the C major unit. Then the black keys one by one, then any octave, then any sound.
  • Intervals. Two notes play, you name the distance: Perfect 5th and Octave first, then the major third, the fourth, the minor third, seconds, sixths, sevenths and the tritone, going up. Then going down, both notes together, and any sound.
  • Chords. A chord plays, you name its quality: major and minor first, then diminished, augmented and the suspended chords. Then the sevenths (major 7, dominant 7, minor 7, half-diminished, diminished 7), then all of them on any sound.
  • Levels. Each level adds an answer or two, and each unit ends on a checkpoint.
  • A round. Press Start (or Space) and the question plays. Press the answer with the mouse, a tap or the computer keyboard: for notes A is C, W is Db, up to J for B; for intervals and chords the number row, 1 for the first answer. Right and the next question plays; wrong and the screen shows what it was, plays yours then the right one from the same root, and waits for you to compare.
  • On the keys. Under the question, two octaves of keys light up once you answer: the notes that played, named on them, and on a wrong answer the notes yours would have added, outlined. Tap a key after answering to hear it. Play again (or Space) repeats the question. Before a round, and after an answer, pressing any answer just plays it.
  • Passing. A round passes at 80% right, a checkpoint at 90%. The menu ticks the levels you passed with your best round, and the end of a round offers the next level. Every level stays open, so you can jump ahead.
  • New answers come up more, and so do the ones you miss most. Every answer of the level comes up at least once a round.
  • Settings. The cog picks the sound (piano, dance piano, deep piano, electric piano, guitar, organ, synth, pad) and, for notes, can play a middle C before each one, for anyone starting out by relative pitch.
  • Stats. The ring in the bar fills toward eight minutes a day, across every skill. Pressed, it opens today's minutes, your streak, and for the skill you are on its mastery and each answer's share right this month, day by day.

Progress and stats stay in this browser.
