Canonical URLs
Every public profile page declares one canonical URL. The artist's own domain when they have one, otherwise their aden.space /@slug URL.
What it is
A profile can be reached at more than one address: aden.space/@you, and, if
you've connected one: your own domain. Search engines treat those as two copies
of the same page, so we tell them which address is the real one. That address is
called the canonical URL.
When you connect a custom domain, your domain becomes the canonical one.
Google indexes and ranks yourdomain.com, and the aden.space copy points at it
instead of competing with it. Without a custom domain, aden.space/@you is the
canonical address.
Using it
Nothing to configure. Verify a custom domain in Settings → Domains and the canonical URL, the structured data and your profile's sitemap all switch over to it: usually within a few days of Google recrawling.
Two things worth knowing:
- Only a domain connected to your profile takes over the profile pages. A domain connected to your website kit only takes over the website pages, and a domain pointed at a single tour, event, album or track never becomes the canonical one for your profile.
- Connect the domain before you promote it. Search engines take time to move a page's ranking from one address to another.
