# Change the theme
Source: https://docs.aden.space/docs/help/start-here/preferences/themes

Pick light or dark, make a theme with your own colours, or set a background image.
Aden follows your system's light or dark setting until you pick something else. You can keep up to 10 of your own themes.

## Pick a theme [#pick-a-theme]

1. Open **Account → Themes**.
2. Pick **System**, **Light** or **Dark**, or click one of your themes.

Click the active theme again to go back to the system setting.

## Make your own [#make-your-own]

1. Click a preset under **Start from a preset**, or **New theme** to start from Aden's colours.
2. Name it, then adjust **Accent**, **Background tint** and **Contrast**. The whole page shows the result as you go.
3. Under **Sidebar**, pick **Dark** for a dark menu around a light page, **Light** for the reverse, or **Match**.
4. Need one exact colour, like the focus ring? Open **Fine-tune every color**.
5. Click **Save and use**, or **Cancel** to put your old colours back.

Use the **…** menu on a theme to edit, duplicate or delete it.

## Add a background image [#add-a-background-image]

1. Under **Account → Themes**, find **Background**.
2. Upload or drop a JPG, PNG, WebP or AVIF, up to 10 MB.
3. Use **Dim** to set how much of the page colour sits over it. **Remove** takes it off.

Teams and organisations can set a background in their settings too. Members see it inside that team or organisation, and their own everywhere else.

## In the desktop app [#in-the-desktop-app]

Open **Settings → Appearance** to pick a theme. Every Aden window changes together.
