# Free up space from FL Studio and duplicate samples
Source: https://docs.aden.space/docs/help/apps/desktop/free-up-space

Clear old FL Studio backups, recordings no project uses, and samples you have twice.
FL Studio keeps a backup every time you save, and every take you record stays in its Recorded folder. After a year that can be tens of gigabytes. Samples pile up twice too, like a pack in Downloads that is also in your sample folder. Aden finds all three and lets you go through them file by file.

## Review what can go [#review-what-can-go]

1. Open **Settings** and choose **Clean up**. Or search "clean up" or "duplicates" in ⌘K.
2. Aden looks through your computer. This can take a few minutes the first time.
3. Look at the three lists:
   * **FL Studio backups**: older backups of each project. The newest 3 of each project always stay.
   * **Unused recordings**: takes in Recorded, Rendered and Sliced audio that none of your FL Studio projects use.
   * **Duplicates**: sounds, MIDI, presets and zips you have more than once on the same disk.
4. Press the arrow on a row to see every file in it. Press the folder button to see a file in Finder or Explorer.
5. Untick anything you want to keep. Everything else starts ticked.

## Free up the space [#free-up-the-space]

1. Choose **Free up space** in the bar at the bottom. It shows how many files and how much space.
2. Old backups and unused takes go to your Trash or Recycle Bin. Changed your mind? Press **Undo** within 5 seconds, or get them back from the Trash later.
3. Duplicates stay where they are, but every copy now points at one file, so your disk stores it once. Every folder and every project still finds its sound, even old projects Aden never saw.

## Good to know [#good-to-know]

* Editing one copy of a duplicate in place changes all of them, because they are now one file.
* Copies on another disk, like an external drive, are left alone.
* Projects Aden can't see, like ones on a drive that isn't plugged in, don't count when it looks for unused takes. Plug the drive in and press **Scan again** before you clear recordings.
* Aden only looks at FL Studio's own folders under Documents/Image-Line. If you moved your backup folder in FL Studio's settings, Aden won't see it.
